I feel happy that few people have started calling me and have suggested that I should write and write more. They were literally head over heels about whatever I write and think. Ok I made up the last line, but honestly it feels good and special. “Taking Bows”. Thank you, such compliments mean a lot. It makes me believe in myself more and for better!

This post is something I have been thinking ever since I encountered a question while writing answer to Strategic Thinking paper in college. Yeah, sometimes, it’s strange, the mechanics of our mind. The question was “IF” tit for tat strategy will work in a relationship. As prof VNB would have said love changes the payoff matrix.

Today, I am writing some random stuff springing in my mind.

I was reading from my chart which hangs just above my bed. It is a poem from Rudyard Kipling “If”. Two lines from the poem strike me.

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;

If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;

I realized, if is a big word and I think of ifs in my life.

If only, I can assert more and say that you can trust me and “Mai Hoon na”, but alas I have thing to let people make up their own god damn minds. Even though, every ounce of my flesh screams “Trust me”.

If only, I can run that one extra mile a day to get that high which come from burning pain in my legs.

If only, I can write more and be proud of it. If only, I can tell my friends more often, that shit happens and move on!

If only, I can sleep for 10 more minutes even after I snooze my alarm 10 times. If only, I can clean my room and get organized.

If only, I can hold that hand and look into those eyes and say things which matter the most. If only, I can be.

If only, I can spend time with friends with whom I have lost touch! If only, I can sing and play songs which are running in my mind all the time.

If only, I don’t have to ever think of ifs.

If only, I can sleep on time!

Musings of a budding driver!

To the amazement of fans of this blog who silently comment in their minds about what I write, it would come as a pleasant surprise, that I have undertaken the task of driving on Bangalore roads. And for the benefits of the people who hit on my blog, I decided to come up with a list of points which will aid in their survival.

First of all, I sincerely request everyone who drives in Bangalore, to start reading Gita. It goes without saying the old Indian adage of “do your bit and don’t think of results” apply very aptly to Bangalore roads. I sincerely advice you to do things right and leave your safety in the hands of other drivers on the road and in worst case your insurer, if you ever have one! All said and done I am not trying to scare people by saying this; all I am saying is that driving to me is a spiritual experience. I feel closer to god.

For making my second point, I will give a bit of context, I drive very early morning or early evenings when the lanes are empty and my destructive tendencies can cause least damage. However, at any given point of time, the complete selfless natures which I am gifted with come to rescue when I am behind the wheels. To start with respect people who walk on the road, don’t frown or honk as it might be rude, when people come in your way taking a stroll in the middle of the road. I say this with utmost sincerity as any form of honking will be followed by words which will drag half of your family in some ugly conversations. I always remember the famous Beatles song of “Let it Be” while driving.

Anyone vaguely familiar with Bangalore roads will realize the good intentions of having one way streets. These boards are put up by traffic people to add zing in our otherwise dull lives. Don't stick to the literal meaning and proceed in one direction. In metaphysical terms, it simply means that you cannot proceed in two directions at once. So drive as you like, in reverse throughout, if you are the fussy type.

As everyone knows, sarcasm is the last thing I would ever want to engage in, I must add a positive point also. Rash driving in residential areas has been prevented by providing a "speed breaker"; two for each house. This bump, incidentally, covers the drainage pipes for that residence and is left opened for easy identification by the corporation authorities.

I hope everyone feels more safe and secured armed with this knowledge!

All in all it is always fun to drive here! ;-)

When you live at a place long enough, you are that place! That is the mood in 701 these days. As the days pass by and we all part our ways to chase what we wanted, we are split between gut wrenching fear about the new and agony of parting and memories of good times.

My millions of silent readers (shh..sniff..no sarcasm here :p), spare my emotional outburst for this post.

To begin with, I doubt, we will ever have the rock nights on Saturdays and Sunday mornings we used to have till now. Banging our heads and playing Guitar till dawn breaks. Needless to say, cold drinks did help us get through the night. J

The mindless invention of totally awesome dude games like Palate, skipping tiles, ingenious magic tricks, lazy chess, flat tennis, gully cricket and carom doubles will be missed. I kind of feel sorry for the world, that it would be deprived of these inventions.

Off late, few dudes in 701 (not me though) also started playing cricket after 1 AM in night till 6 AM after a heavy dose of cold drinks. To my amazement, these dudes find insulting that someone complains about them. But I cannot blame them the culture of 701 runs through their blood and mind you this blood doesn’t run cold!

I would miss incessant chatter patter with our dear neighbour upstairs. The talks and walks of life, office and relationships. I would also miss the incessant knocking on the doors for food or remaining episodes of how I met your mother. Most of all I would miss irritating someone!

To my regular readers of the blog, it comes as no surprise that I am witty and humorous. (Warning: For cynics and pessimists, don’t frown, buhu, I am those two and get a life, stop judging!!). I suppose, these guys will miss everything about me. As I always say, I am proud of my modesty, they are surely going to miss my humble and silent nature. :p

Via this post, I would like to highlight, how awesome 701 was and how it has now become an integral part of all our lives. When I am stuffing my boxes for taking to a new place, I remember a clip from Rock Balbao (for the people who haven’t seen Rocky 6, they deserve to go to hell, so log on to torrent and download a pirated version to prevent yourself from going there!).

Rocky: When you stay at a place long enough, you are that place!

And as I drag my final box out of the house, I am leaving a part of me here.

Art of abstraction!

Today, after suggestion from a lot of close friends, decided to upload one of my paintings on blog. Two things to be kept in mind, frist excuse the 2 MP mobile camera clarity and lack of finnese and second, excuse the background of shoes, chair and floor from the painting. I have posted two version, one which I clicked in light (ah! this is just pure build up :) ) and one with little less light!

Few interpretations from people around!
- When you cover the red color with hand the impact changes drastically.
- The smoke like opinions clouds vision. (lack of visibility of red color)
- Effect of good company flows everywhere even to the darkest corners of the room.
- Love clounds everything else.
- and best of all, jalti agarbatti which is what it is :) !!

Anyways, I leave now, making space for some interpretations!

Stochastic pricing – Is this the future?

Freshly out of the Quantitative Methods course and into Quantitative Methods course part 2 in this term, forces me to see the text more in terms of numbers and statistics. Off late one word which catches my fascination is a seemingly complex statistical jargon known as “Stochastic”.
If one traces the roots of the word, the roots lie in Greece and means “Skilled at aiming”, since stochos is a target. In very layman’s terms, it is an approach in which a target value is calculated probalistically based on a combination of variables.

This reminds me of some of the backdated issues of Economist. People are talking of stochastic pricing for Baseball matches. Sounds intriguing to say the least, but makes business sense. And if one thinks through, it is a win-win situation for both the buyer and the seller.

Taking cue from this idea, big cold drinks giant came up with the idea of coming up with a vending machine which will sense the outside temperature and other stuff (read as variables) and come with the price of the can. It was an attempt for stochastic pricing. I am not too sure why the idea was abandoned.

Extending the pricing for IT. One is hearing pricing based on

- - Number of incidents for Application management.

- - Number of defects or rather absence of defects for application development.

- - Availability percentage for application support

Going by the same logic, am I staring at a future where salaries are determined stochastically? ;-)

Let us hope not, but pricing the services and products stochastically is indeed something companies should look forward to. But there are many variables to consider!

Want to do your bit for the country? – Simply Marry???

It was Friday, Christmas morning of 2009. I went out to have my regular cuppa and the first page on DNA asks me to forget Pranab.

I sip on and ponder on the headline for a while. The cynic in me immediately says this is all ****- ****. I decided to take on the challenge. Armed with lethal weapons like Google and Google, I carry on. For the benefit of the huge fan base of this blog (don’t try smelling sarcasm here, I have 7845 mails from my fans asking me to begin blogging!), these are some of the facts which were presented.
- Half of India is less than 29 years.
- Marriage contributes around 4% of GDP, which is 3rd largest contributor.
- Average wedding spending 1-15 lakhs for the great Indian Middle Class.
- 200- 600 Crore industry/year spent on weddings.
- Growth is easily double digits (Yes, I said double digit growth).
Looking at these numbers, I am compelled to believe the Indian Growth Story in quite a non-literal sense ;-)
There are few more things which I think the report missed. Thanks to urbanization and moving to nuclear families, the bonding between the couples in on a decline. There are innumerable divorces and quite a lot of remarriages (Read more moolah).

Distress and Optimism

The current financial crisis is probably the worst after the great american depression in the early nineteenth century. With the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, now the question in everyone's mind is whether the Financial world going to survive this hard phase. The top indian IT companies have finance as one of their most important verticals in terms of revenue generated. So the downturn of this sector is surely going to effect the IT industry. But it also provide a great oppurtunity for Indian IT companies, known for concentrating mainly in the US market. The fact that in recent times india has seen several big deals that might change the fortune of a few low key sectors also provide a sign of oppurtunity for the IT companies. We should also take a note of the thing that it not neccessary to have a client to start creating a great software package. Its better if we start looking this crisis as a oppurtunity to rectify a few mistakes that we did in the beginning.

I would say for now, we need to go in the direction of enhancing our product manufacturing than service based things. This is certainly a big opportunity for us to invest more on RnD on out product(s) and improve them. Yes, the US market has slowed down. But has it stopped people from buying laptops/cams/handycams/ all other electronic goods from the US? They are products. US Co.s are still able to sell them and provide service to those products. Its high time we invest more in our product(s). I hope we understand this.

I think of this word and all I can think of is my cargo pants...with my bag...out to an unknown location. Outlooktraveller always says ' a good traveller has no destination and no fixed path and has no idea when he is going toreturn'
The idea is apt and true in all senses... Some of things which I believe needs to be done for travelling:
1. I have always believed in being impulsive. I hardly think that is possible.. but i love this idea of beingimpulsive..deciding things in a split of a second. Travelling should be like that..u decide to go one fine morningand all u needs is to pack ur bag with essentials and go..worst even...dont even care for essentials..u can pickthem up from anywhere :)
2. If u dont know, where u r going to travel, nothing like..go to a station..ask them to give u a ticket to astation 5 station southward or 3rd station northward...there is nothing exploring unknown places...u feel likebeing columbus for a day...the experience is amazing...
3. If possible reach ur destination on cycle...no travelling is equivalent to the one, where u r completelydrained by the time u reach ur destination..then its becomes all the more easier to soak in the new place..
4. Take a notebook and pen with u while travelling...google out important things after the travel, I have alwaysbelieved history of a place has a lot to teach
5. Travel alone... nothing more ruins a travel, ur girl friend keeps nagging to finish up the muesuem so that shecan hit the shops ;-).. there are always exceptions to this... I hope I am wise enough to understand when I haveto do this!
6. Be Frugal when u r on a journey...this is atleast what I try to do...u r more focussed on thing which is onyour hand..travelling..

As read in a book by Ramit Sethi, I should be on information diet.
There is too much I am reading...I am trying to absorb, and after that thinking that I am satisfied with my knowledge... I will prefer writing one post rather than only reading 5 blogs.

The Course to Assertiveness

Attended a course on Assertiveness. It said, it is a skill that can be aqquired. It is something which can be gained.
haan haan....i dont want to comment on that....
there are three types of behaviour....
1) Passive
2) Aggressive
3) Assertive

Passive is not reactive.
Aggressive is over reactive.
and Assertive is our ideal match....

oh come on...i dont know y prompted me to attend this course....but it was a nice one to make me realize where i fall and that is somewhere between passiveness and assertiveness.....

sometimes a lot passive just out of sheer laziness or sometimes because of a sense to avert conflicts......

Sometimes assertive to meet my "selfish" needs...sometimes just because, there was no other alternative.....

Have a similar kinda of courses lined up for me in next few days....will post accordingly then...

Problem Solving - Must for CAT

I am lost these days....m i too much interested in giving CAT , MBA is do or die for me, honestly speaking i dont hv a concrete answer fr these questions....but fr the sake of 10000 odd ruppes which i hv invested in buying forms for the so called esteemed institutes...i m going to give it a shot... so my post will revolve around problem solving...sequential problem solving to be more precise.....

i bumped into this while trying to relax a bit on net... not my thoughts at all but definitely had some influence on me for a while....

we are constantly trying to make some sense of our world and the way people treat each other.....
sequential Problem Solving is for those who want to reassure themselves that their thinking is logically correct rather than emotionally or impulsively misguided.... it provides step by step procedures for applying computer-like decision making to daily living....many ordinary problems involve not only physical, concrete parts but also interpersonal elements, thus problem solving involves both the physical world and the interpersonal world.

the underlying principle, throughout Sequential Problem Solving, is an obligation to help each other as citizens of a world community, and an acknowledgement that our real enemy is often ourselves. Our common problem is understanding ourselves in order to be a friend to others. Sequential Problem Solving provides us with a way of checking for the kindness factor in problem solving, with the goal of helping others and being a good citizen in the world community.

And that is the altruistic side of solving problems for you.....

Kant defines Enlightenment as

Enlightenment is man’s release from this self-incurred immaturity [which is] his inability to make use of his understanding without direction from another…Sapere aude! “Have courage to use your own reason!” that is the motto of the enlightenment.

I believe that the transformation of reason brought about by the scientific revolution that so impressed Kant and other Enlightenment thinkers holds the key to the fulfilment of the programme of disenchantment and secularisation everywhere. Kant’s call of ‘Sapere aude!’ was simultaneously an invocation of a new standard of reason meant to challenge all a priori truths that we accept out of faith, cultural conditioning or overt indoctrination. Once we understand the transformation of reason that the scientific revolution and the Enlightenment set in motion, we will be in a better position to understand why modernity in India has this feel of incompleteness, superficiality and even schizophrenia.
Modern India has embraced the end products of the scientific revolution and the Enlightenment in the west – namely, modern technology and a liberal-secular framework of laws encoded in the Constitution. But it has done so without challenging the cultural authority of the supernatural and mystical world view derived from the idealistic strands of Hinduism. If anything, from its very beginning in the Bengal renaissance, India’s project of modernity has evolved within a uniquely Indian inclusive style of counter-Enlightenment. By counter-Enlightenment I mean only this: in a stark contrast to the Enlightenment project of bringing religion within the limits of scientific reason, the Indian counter-Enlightenment has tended to subsume or co-opt scientific reason within the spirit-based cosmology and epistemology of “the Vedas.”1 Since independence, India has created an impressive workforce of scientists and engineers, many of them doing fairly advanced science which meets the standards of excellence in the best laboratories in the rest of the world. But India’s science has not evolved out of a critical engagement with the religious commonsense that still pervades the cultural life outside – and often inside – the labs. Modern ideas and innovations are being incorporated into a traditional Hindu world view, without diminishing many of its starkly irrational, occult and pseudo-scientific tendencies.

India and China

Off late there are many comparisons that are made between the two countries and my only concern is that can these two countries afford to be enemies or even can they afford to be friends.

People talk of partnering with china. But why would china accept our hand. For the simple reason they have a manpower which is much more hardworking and much more technically sound. There only constraint at the moment is that of the English speaking community. But the way they are growing in this field, it would be difficult to sustain and hence there would come a stage when we will have to run for our jobs. We cannot stop them from growing. But then the only option that is with us is to grow and strengthen the strong points we have.

Identifying the key strengths and weaknesses would be a good point to start off. One major weakness in our case is that we are not productive. Agreed we are hardworking, but when it comes to delivering, we fail and we fail miserably. So that is one point which we can strengthen and build upon.

Our key strength is raw manpower, make them more technically sound. The onus of this should partly be on the govt. and partly on every individual, to constantly enhance and evolve and constantly innovate.

Because one thing is for sure that whatever be the case, being good is not going to be enough in today’s era. We have to go one step further or may more than one.

It is for sure we cannot be friends and we can not be enemies either, because both of us have some points which are very strong and can turn the tide. The safe option is to go for a symbiotic relation. I do this thing for you, you do this for me. May be distribution of business based on geographical region. And what more….there can n number of arrangements.

So let’s stick to “Hindi -Chini bhai bhai” notion.

Rekindling the Spirit

I have decided to start afresh. The sentence has many connotations. But in short, I am starting to blog again. I missed the place. I missed my freedom of expression and above all I missed my self……my realization.

God know why I stopped and god knows why I started. Yes but I know I have started all for myself.

One inspiring force to start all fresh is one of my best frnds and this blog is all dedicated to my sweet frnd.

This frndship started on a very professional note. Hi, how r u ? and bye. That’s it and that’s all. But there was something which was more than this, which was always there in my mind, but not expressed and this connection was in the way we see things and the way we perceive and our likes and dislikes. And the way my frnd laughs when I crack a joke. There is an immediate connection felt.

That’s it to start with. This will never end.

Its ironic dat we hv to celebrate this day, despite the fact dat if the very concept of teacher ws not thr, we would not hv evolved…the very fact that all the knowledge that we hv right now is all due to them.....but unfortunately this relation is now fading…….we hv to realize that if this relation does not survive how r we goin to transfer knowledge……many may argue dat it is not the only way for gainin knowledge…but then this is a relation where the transition of knowledge is smooth and efficient………
My life has been a biggest teacher for me…apart from them..
I wud like to convey my best wishes to some of them……….
First of all Alka & vyas madam who taught me in my primary standard…..madam I still remember you.
Then Kadri madam & hakoo madam I remember ur beatings a lot & to be honest I miss them………….
Nishith sir……I m yet to find a frndly sir like u………….roshan sir…..you r the best mentor I hv ever had……learned a lot frm & probably implementing a lot………….
Kochar sir…….ur teachings are imprinted in my mind….never forget whatever u hv said……

I post today with a sense of happiness. For the last few days have been very hectic.....i ws literally screwed by everyone......i ws very frutrated & very upset...but then i ws readin these two fabulous piece of written work.....one ws dialogues of plato & the other one ws the poems by oscar wilde................and i tell u it ws fantabulous.............
the poem abt a prisoner who ws punished to death becoz he killed the person he loved & that made me realized that everyone kills the person they love....either by having feelings of possession, using the weopon of lust...using their prejudices.......i realize this is so very true....even i did it.....i confess..........
the dialogues of plato is a book to treasure & surely it is a starting point to any thinking person's education.....i dont follow any person's philosophy.....but surely this book ignites u to think....think what u want.........for the first time i felt free readin a book...otherwise what is the normal course that u forget urself & try to imitate what is there in the book....but that is not sensible.....surely it forces u to think why u live in this world.............i m damn sure its very difficult to find out.....but then now i m searchin............& wud see that petty things in life dont bother me..............

A Secular Rethink

I ws supposed to write this for the indian express essay but ws late......so bear me......
1947 to 2005, 58 years of independence, independence of Idia, of ppl, their souls, of their lives. Many things have changed, views have changed, "u" have changed, "i" have changed & most importantly what u say when u meet a person for the first time has changed.....therefore there is an urgent need to redefine what we say, what we speak, we have to redefine our expressions.....we have to redefine the very social structure in which we live...............
Freedom, Secularism & justice, these r the 3 pillars on which the country stands. its time that we rethink abt this structure......let these 3 be amalgated to form the foundation materials on whcih the pillars of prosperity, happiness & peace stand. the pillars can stand firm, if the foundation is strong......
over the period of time, the word secularism, now spans everything from religion to expressions.......firslty secularism is justice.....it seems i m in love with this word..........justice shud imply right things at the right place & at the right time.........when we say secularism we shud imply justice.........it shud a citizen to lead a just life.......in a sense that he believes is right & suited to him............
with justice now being linked to a person's choice.....it is linked to freedom........with it comes responsibility, we r here to live life with a sense of purpose, with a sense of responsilbility....it shud start with ur family & gradually to ur country & then to the whole world & then to the whole universe.......
with we entering 21st century, boundaries shud cease, then the freedom is "realized"....boundries shud vanish not only physical but also mental as well........
when we have both justice & freedom in place, secularism can flourish, where ppl worship whomever they want to..............where citizens have respect for each other..............
we have to redifne secularism not jst in the eyes of the law, but in the eye of citizens...........only then we wud be able to achieve peace....peace among countries....peace among individuals.....nd most imp, peace within us.........
